Scirpus pungens

  • AKA: Schoenoplectus pungens, Scirpus americanus
  • Scirpus are not grasses, they are perennial sedges
  • Triangular stems bear few blades up to 25 cm long
  • Stems terminate in clusters of inflorescences
  • A small cluster of cone-like spikes grows on terminal tips
  • Bracts beyond seed heads, 15 cm long, seem to be a continuation of the stems
  • This sedge is not known for its ornamental nature but rather for its use in weaving

Growing and Maintenance Tips:


Grows in marshes, along pond shorelines, or wet meadows in full sun to light shade. This sedge spreads by rhizomes and is a good choice for erosion control.  Dead stems can be cleaned out in early spring.
