  • Pendulous clusters of fragrant white flowers
  • Flowers are followed by red pea-sized cherries, ripening to purple-black
  • Dark green elliptical to ovate leaves turn yellow and rose in the fall

Growing and Maintenance Tips:


A large tree at maturity, making it a good specimen for open, sunny locations. The fruit is extremely bitter to humans but loved by birds. 

Additional Notes about Black Cherry:


Native to Ontario and parts of North America.

Native Americans prepared decoctions with the inner bark for cough medicines and tea-like cold remedies.

Larval host for up to 450 species of butterflies and moths! The flowers provide early-season nectar for bees and other pollinators. The fruit is enjoyed by over 70 species of birds as well as small mammals. In the wild, the twigs are browsed by bears and deer.
