Showy blooms flourish in a moist soil with filtered shade, adapting to drier conditions with more shade. May self-seed under optimum conditions.
Larval host for several native moths, including the camouflaged Pink-Washed Looper Moth. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, bumblebees, and hummingbirds, and provide late season nectar for migrating butterflies and hummingbirds.
All parts of this plant are TOXIC.
