Thrives in full sun, poor soils and dry conditions and is often seen growing on hills or slopes. Drought tolerant, it will also grow in a loamy soil if the site is well-drained.
Larval host for many species of native moths, including the Glorious Flower Moth and the Blazing Star Borer Moth. The flowers attract a multitude of bees, along with butterflies such as Painted Ladies and Monarchs, and wasps, and provide late season nectar for migrating butterflies. The seeds are enjoyed by many small birds.
