  • Rounded fluffy mauve-lilac flowerets on leafy flower spikes
  • Average flower spikes have 15-40 loosely-spaced blooms
  • Among the last Liatris to flower, L.aspera flowerets open roughly simultaneously
  • Narrow dark green grass-like basal leaves, 45 cm long

Growing and Maintenance Tips:


Commonly occurs in dry prairie soils, open woods, glades, meadows and along roadsides or railway tracks. Thrives in full sun and is tolerant of drought, summer heat and humidity and dry or rocky soils. Does not like a wet winter soil.

Native to Ontario

Larval host for many species of native moths, including the Glorious Flower Moth. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, bumblebees, and wasps, and provide late season nectar for migrating butterflies. The seeds are enjoyed by many small birds.
