Grows best in partial shade, in average to moist soil, however, tolerates a wide range of moisture conditions. This species tends to be more drought tolerant than others in the genus. Naturalizes in open, woodland edges and along streams and ponds. Colonizes easily, making it unsuitable for small gardens.
Helianthus foliage supports myriad moth species' larvae. The nectar and pollen feed many insects and bees, and the seeds are food for birds, mice and squirrels.
