Grow in partial sun or dappled sunlight, moist to average conditions, and a rich loamy soil. Naturalizes aggressively by seed and rhizome. Flowering is more prolific in long hot summers.
Larval host to moths and butterflies, including the Silvery Checkerspot. The flowers provide late-season pollen and nectar for a range of butterflies, wasps, and bees, including at least 6 specialist bee species. The seeds are enjoyed by small birds.
