Growing and Maintenance Tips:

Grows best in organically rich, well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade. Hot, dry locations often cause Epilobium to go into dormancy. Remove spent flowers for additional blooms and to prevent self-seeding in unwanted areas.

Additional Notes about Fireweed:

Native to Ontario and most of the Northern Hemisphere.

Larval host for White-lined Sphinx moth and Bedstraw Hawkmoth. The protein-rich foliage, when young, is edible for human beings as well as large and small mammals and livestock. The flowers are a preferred major source of nectar for various species of native bees. They also attract hummingbirds and various species of insects. Epilobium is one of the first plants to colonize land after logging or a fire, leading to the common name of Fireweed.
