Growing and Maintenance Tips:

It will tolerate a range of soil types and pH, growing best in moist, well-drained conditions and does not tolerate shade. An excellent pioneer plant, providing habitat for animals and plants.

Additional Notes about Eastern Cottonwood:

Native to Ontario and most of North America.

The leaves are rich in protein and amino acids and can be as nourishing as meat. The bark contains salicin, the main ingredient in aspirin.

Larval host for many species of moths and butterflies, including the colourful Tiger Swallowtail. The woolly seeds are used by birds for nesting material.  Many birds and mammals browse the buds, leaves, and stems. The twigs and bark are an important food for beavers, who also use it for building their dams and lodges.
