Polygonatum multiflorum

  • Rhizomatous perennial with upright-arching stems
  • Green ovate leaves are arranged alternately along the stems
  • Bell-shaped flowers dangle at each leaf axis beneath the arching stems
  • Sweetly fragrant waxy white blooms
  • Round bluish-black berries follow the flowers
  • Excellent for cutting
  • Bloom Time: Late April to May

Growing and Maintenance Tips:


Grows best in an average to moist, well-drained soil, in dappled to full shade.  It will also tolerate a dry shady area, provided the soil has good nutrient levels. Easy-care perennial, spreading by rhizomes to form colonies.

Additional Notes about Solomon's Seal:


Native to many parts of Europe, and invasive in Ontario. All parts of the plant may cause severe discomfort if ingested.

Consider using Polygonatum biflorum instead of the non-native P. multiflorum.
