Balsam Fir

Mature needles are emerald-green; new growth needles are lighter green
One of the most aromatic of all firs
Purple cones grow upright and disintegrate while still on the plant
May benefit from light pruning and shaping when young to develop into a specimen plant

Growing and Maintenance Tips:

Balsam fir grows best in an acidic moist to damp soil. Avoid planting in heavy clay. Frequently used for cut Christmas trees.

Additional Notes about Balsam Fir:

Native to Ontario and parts of North America.

Many birds nest and find cover in Abies balsamea. Birds and small mammals seek the seeds. Porcupines feed on the bark.
