Growing and Maintenance Tips:

Effective as a specimen, as a large, informal hedge or screen. While barely tolerating full sun, it will thrive in partial to full shade in a well-drained soil. Native habitat is along shorelines in areas with poor soil conditions.

Additional Notes about Hop Tree:

Native to Ontario

Larval host for the threatened Giant Swallowtail and at least 3 specialist insects: The Hop-Tree Borer, The Hop-Tree Leaf-roller Moth, and the Hop-Tree Barkbeetle. The fragrant flowers produce copious amounts of nectar and pollen, attracting a wide range of insects, especially the Juniper Hairstreak Butterfly. The persistent samaras feed birds and small mammals into the winter.

The foliage and roots have a strong fragrance that deters deer.
