Adaptable to average, moist to dry conditions, in full sun to open shade and once mature are drought tolerant. Excellent cottage garden, rock garden or shade garden plant.
Larval host for Baltimore Checkerspot butterflies and Chalcedony Midget Moths, Verbena Bud Moths, and Sparganothis Leafroller Moths.
The flowers are visited by hummingbirds, bees, and native moths.
The name penstemon is derived from 'Pente' (5) and 'stemon' referring to the five-stamened flowers.
