All parts of this plant are poisonous. Touching the plant is not a problem. Ingesting berries, flowers, or leaves can lead to skin photosensitivity.

Larval host for at least 20 species of butterflies and moths, including St John's Wort Moth. The flowers attract many native insects, and the seeds are enjoyed by birds.
