The Cherokee used the bitter tasting root of goldenseal for many purposes, i.e. as an antiseptic, a general health tonic, and to treat snakebite. The Iroquois used it to treat whooping cough, pneumonia, and digestive disorders. Early American pioneers used it primarily as an eyewash, but also to treat sore throats, mouth sores, and digestive disorders. Today it is used to boost the immune system.
Due to habitat loss and unscrupulous over-harvesting, Goldenseal is listed as rare or endangered in many US states and listed as Threatened on Schedule 1 of the federal Species At Risk Act (Canada).
The flowers provide nectar and pollen to various bees and other insects, while the fruit is enjoyed by birds and small mammals.
