Growing and Maintenance Tips:

Dicentra cucullaria grows best in a moist, fertile, humus-rich, neutral to slightly alkaline soil, in partial to full shade. These plants normally go dormant early to midsummer.

Additional Notes about Dutchman's Breeches:

Native to Ontario

Flowers look similar to a man's close-fitting breeches, worn upside down, leading to the common name.

All parts of the plants are toxic to human beings, cats, and cattle.

Early nectar source for insects. Of special interest for bumblebees.

Seed dispersal occurs via a complicated relationship with ants.
