  • Conical at a young age, becoming broadly oval with maturity
  • Narrow, oblong leaves are smooth-margined, glossy, and dark green
  • Insignificant flowers (catkins) are followed by rounded acorns
  • Acorns do not ripen until the following year
  • Fall foliage is a yellow-brown to red-brown
