Growing best in a slightly acidic soil, firethorn requires consistent moisture until established, then they are moderately drought tolerant. They will tolerate partial shade, but will show best fruit production in full sun. Pruning can be done anytime of the year and they can be trained to climb a trellis for a spectacular winter show. Firethorn can benefit from protection (burlap wrap) against drying winter winds and winter sun in an exposed location.
