Pistacia chinensis

  • Small deciduous tree with rounded spreading crown
  • Dark green compound pinnate leaves sometimes turn yellow to orange and red in fall
  • Insignificant yellow flowers in spring
  • Dioecious: there are male trees and female trees
  • Female trees produce inedible small drupes that ripen in fall
  • Older trees will shed their bark in patches to reveal peachy inner bark

Growing and Maintenance Tips:


Best planted in full sun in a protected place; we are at the northern edge of its hardiness zone. Will tolerate a range of soil types but not consistently wet.

Additional Notes about Chinese Pistache:


Native to China, Taiwan and the Phillipines, these plants have naturalized in pockets of some southern states.
