Ilex grow best in a slightly acidic slightly moist well-drained soil, in full sun to partial shade. One male ilex plant will effectively pollinate up to six female plants.
Hollies are dioecious: plants are either male or female. If berries are desired, one compatible male ilex plant will effectively pollinate up to six female plants, from up to 15 metres away.
Ilex berries can be harmful; they contain an alkaloid similar to caffeine.
