Growing and Maintenance Tips:


Grows best in an average to moist, well-drained fertile soil in partial to full shade. Thrives in some sun where soils remain consistently moist. Foliage often disappears by late summer.

  • The rhizomes release a red sap when cut, giving rise to the common name bloodroot.
  • Very slow-growing rhizome approx. 5-7 centimetres a year.
  • Double-flowering bloodroot differs from the species in that it is sterile, therefore, propagation is achieved only by dividing the rhizomes.
