Growing and Maintenance Tips:

A long-lived tree that does well in a wide range of soils and locations, making it a good choice for street tree plantings.

Do not prune Oaks during the growing season. Oaks are highly susceptible to Oak Wilt, which is spread by a sap beetle that is attracted to fresh wounds. Prune oaks only during the dormant season in winter after the leaves have fallen. Oak Wilt can kill a mature Oak within one season.

Additional Notes about Shumard Oak:

Native to Ontario

Larval and foliar host for hundreds of species of moths and butterflies! Shumard Oak acorns are large and nutritious, and are frequently dropped later in the season, feeding deer, turkeys, ducks, squirrels and chipmunks.
