Bergman Japanese white pine thrives in medium moisture, a well-drained soil, in full sun and in cool summer climates. They are tolerant of a variety of soil types, including poor soils, as long as the drainage is good. 

To improve looks and airflow, these plants would benefit from periodic 'combing' (use your fingers) to remove dead material.
