Thrives in full sun or partial shade in a well-drained soil with some tolerance of poorer soils, including salt spray. Remove spent foliage in the spring. Clumps should be divided every 2-3 years to maintain their appeal. Montauk daisies tend to drop their lower leaves; planting them behind something else will lessen their unsightliness.
Nipponanthemum nipponicum is native to coastal areas in Japan, but has naturalized near Montauk, New York, leading to its common name.
Montauk daisies make excellent cut flowers.
