Also called Constantinople hazel

  • Upright, pyramidal form, with horizontal branching and a strong, central leader
  • Serrated, broad, ovate, semi-glossy, bright green leaves in the summer
  • Fall foliage is an insignificant yellow
  • Catkins are followed by spiny, husk-encased clusters of nuts
  • Corky, tan bark on trunks may flake to reveal an orange-brown inner bark

Growing and Maintenance Tips:


A great specimen with its corky bark and well-formed crown, ideal for lawns, as a shade or street tree, especially on dry sites.

 

Additional Notes about Turkish Hazel:


Edible nuts appear in clusters with spiny, hairy husks covering and extending beyond each nut. Nuts may be roasted and eaten by humans, but are usually eaten by squirrels.
