Cercis grow in average to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade.
Genus name comes from the Greek word kerkis meaning "weaver's shuttle" in reference to the resemblance of each seed pod to a weaver's shuttle. Cercis is in the legume family, and thus is capable of fixing needed atmospheric nitrogen.
