More than one cultivar must be planted in order to facilitate the best pollination and subsequent fruit production. However, 'Gravenstein' is in a limited class and is not capable of pollinating any other apples.
'Gravenstein' was introduced to western North America in the early 19th century, perhaps by Russian fur traders, who were said to have planted a tree at Fort Ross in 1811.
