Can be found in dry, rocky, sandy sites or in coastal swamps in full sun.
The common name refers to the high resin content of the knotty wood. Colonists produced turpentine and tar used for axle grease from this species.
The seeds are released in mid-winter, and provide timely food for pine warblers, grosbeak, chickadees, quail and small mammals.
